St. Louis has been a soccer city for generations: from the 1907 St. Louis Soccer League, the only soccer league in the country at the time; to the 1950 World Cup team, in which 5 of the 11 team members hailed from St. Louis; to the various teams that have called St. Louis home, including the Storm, the Steamers, and the Ambush. Now St. Louis is gearing up for another soccer renaissance with the 2023 debut of St. Louis City SC, whose new stadium campus is already making its mark on downtown. Join us for a discussion about the history of soccer in St. Louis and what the future of soccer could mean for the city’s economic development. The conversation will be moderated by Bill McDermott and feature Brian Hall (Explore St. Louis), Ricardo Garza (Club Atletico Saint Louis), Vin Ko (St. Louis CITY Soccer Club) and Dave Lange (author of Soccer Made in St. Louis: A History of the Game in America’s First Soccer Capital, from Reedy Press). Books will be on sale in the gift shop and a book-signing will begin at 5:45 p.m. before the panel discussion. This event is free and open to the public.
