Zenthoefers of St. Louis shocks Eintracht Frankfurt of West Germany, 2-1, at Public Schools Stadium. “Rated a three- or four-goal stronger team,” according to U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame journalist Dent McSkimming of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Eintracht Frankfurt falls behind 2-0 and scores late on a goal by Hubert Schieth. Zenthoefers, which had won the St. Louis Major League in the 1950-51 season, adds several players, including future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famers Charley Colombo and Frank “Pee Wee” Wallace, from league rival Simpkins Ford for the Eintracht match. Amiel Muniz puts Zenthoefers ahead in the first half with a clever shot just inside the post. Future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Harry Keough converts a penalty kick in the second half. While applauding Eintracht’s skillful play, McSkimming credits “the impenetrable nature of the St. Louis defense” that undoes Eintracht. Colombo, Keough, future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Bobby Kehoe and Bob Fitzgerald frustrate Eintracht’s attack. “And when they were finally outwitted by the weaving of the clever German forwards, there was magnificent Bob Burkhard between the goal posts,” according to McSkimming. Eintracht had finished eighth out of 18 teams in the south division of the Oberliga, the top tier of German soccer at the time, during the 1950-51 season. The Germans had outscored their first three opponents on their American tour 23-4. Zenthoefers will go on to become the great Kutis team that wins six consecutive U.S. Amateur Cups from 1956-61 and the U.S. Open Cup in 1957. Kutis is the last team to win both cups in the same year.
