Chester Kowalewski keeps a lid on the goal for Kutis in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals. But the Los Angeles Maccabees, “applying relentless pressure, finally solved the goalkeeper wizardry” of Kowlewski in the final minutes to score a 1-0 victory in Los Angeles, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch will report the next day. Kowaleski (pictured at right) “had no chance whatever” on Benny Binstoch’s header of a rebound off the goal post for the game’s only goal with just under seven minutes in regulation. Kowalewski is named the game’s most valuable player. Maccabees, the 1973 Open Cup champion, will win the 1975 Cup on June 15 by beating New York Inter-Giuliana 1-0. Kowalewski, who set a still-standing SIU-Edwardsville record with 12 shutouts in 1973, will play on Kutis’ 1977 Missouri Amateur Cup and 1979 Missouri Open Cup champions.
