Future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Pat McBride is born. He will become one of the greatest midfielders in St. Louis soccer history and will be one of the best American-born players of his era. He will twice earn All-American honors at St. Louis University, help the Billikens win two NCAA championships, play on the U.S. national team, and log 10 seasons for the NASL’s St. Louis Stars. In a league dominated by foreign players, McBride will be named to the all-NASL team three times. He will earn national coach of the year honors at the junior college and professional levels, guiding Meramec to a national junior college title and the Steamers to two MISL finals. “You couldn’t stop Pat,” McBride’s Stars’ teammate, John Carenza, will tell Dave Lange in a 2010 interview. “He had endless energy. He was always running around causing havoc somewhere.”
