Becky Sauerbrunn plays the entire match as the U.S. Women’s National Team wins its 500th game in the program’s history by defeating Portugal, 1-0, in an international friendly in Lisbon. Considered one of women’s soccer’s top defenders in the world, Sauerbrunn, a Ladue High School graduate, helps the U.S. overcome four shots and three corner kicks from Portugal. Jessica McDonald scores the game’s only goal on a sequence that begins with Sauerbrunn’s pass from her position at left center back in the U.S. defensive half of the field. Sauerbrunn, the all-time leader in caps by St. Louis men’s and women’s players, makes her 148th appearance for the United States. Her current caps total is 210. Sauerbrunn and the USWNT will play Germany in friendlies in Ft. Lauderdale on Nov. 10 and in Harrison, N.J., on Nov. 13.
