October 14th (1894)
Oct. 14, 1894: A sports roundup in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that Christian Brothers College will host the St. Patrick’s Young Men’s Sodality “under association rules.” The short item includes the starting lineups for the match. The outcome of the game will not be reported in the subsequent issues of the Post-Dispatch. With three kinds of football being played in St. Louis, it is important that the story specifies that the game will be played “under association rules” so anyone interested in watching the match knows that it will be what is called today “soccer,” and not “rugby football” or “gridiron football.” All three sports are played at CBC in the late 1800s when CBC was an elementary school, high school and college for boys and men.
