Sept. 22 (2006)

The MISL’s St. Louis Steamers go on inactive status and will never play again. Just a few months earlier, the Steamers had the MISL’s best regular-season record (23-7) and had reached the MISL finals, where they lost to the Baltimore Blast, two games to one. The Steamers played from 2000-2006 and were the second pro indoor team in St. Louis to bear the name. The original Steamers operated from 1979-88 and averaged more than 10,000 fans per game in tbeir first six seasons. The Storm (1989-1992) and Ambush (1992-2000) followed. High-level professional indoor soccer will not return to St. Louis after the demise of the second Steamers until a new franchise under an old name — the Ambush — begins play in 2013. The new Ambush continue today.
