Just a few hours after graduating from St. Louis University, Jim Bokern scores the game’s only goal as the St. Louis Stars blank the Rochester Lancers before 10,382 fans at Busch Stadium. Denny Vaninger, Bokern’s teammate on the Kutis 1971 U.S. Amateur Cup champions, heads the ball into the space ahead of Bokern in the 35th minute. Bokern chips the ball over goalkeeper Claude Campos. Mike Winter nets the shutout for the Stars, who gain their first victory of the NASL season in three tries.
