Central Brewers (formerly Stix, Baer and Fuller) of St. Louis win their third consecutive National Challenge Cup (today’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup) on aggregate goals against the Pawtucket (R.I.) Rangers at Newark City Stadium in Newark, N.J. The best-of-three series opened with Central Brewers winning, 5-2, at Walsh Stadium in St. Louis on April 28. The teams tied, 1-1, in Pawtucket on May 5. The tie in game two prompts officials to rule that the Cup winner will be decided on goal differential a few days before game three in Newark on May 12. The Rangers win the third game, 3-1, but Central Brewers win the Cup with seven total goals to the Rangers’ six. Willie McLean puts St. Louis ahead in the 20th minute of the third game. McLean and company barely hang on as the Rangers score three times in the second half. The scoring stars for the winners in the three-game series are two future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famers: Billy Gonsalves nets three goals and Bert Patenaude adds two. Walter Dick, another future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer, has three goals over the series for the Rangers. The two previous Cups went to Stix, Baer & Fuller, essentially the same team as Central Brewers. The team will gain the 1936 and 1937 Cup finals as the St. Louis Shamrocks, but will lose both times. The 1935 Cup will be the last for a St. Louis team until Joe Simpkins Ford wins in 1948.
