St. Louis FC of the second-division USL names U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Preki as head coach. The team will finish with a 9-14-9 record in Perk’s single season with St. Louis FC.

October 11th (1958)
Oct. 11, 1958: Soccer kicks off in a modest way at St. Louis University as the Bills play their first match, a 1-1 tie with Wheaton College, at Hickey Field in St. Louis.

Oct. 10 (2020)
Joaquin Rivas scores the game’s only goal in the third minute of stoppage time to give St. Louis FC a victory over Hartford Athletic in the first round of the USL Championship playoffs in Hartford. The outcome marks the only playoff victory for St. Louis FC in its six-year history. The team will cease operations after the 2020 season.

October 9th (2018)
Oct. 9, 2018: The Taylor and Kavanaugh families hold a news conference at Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club to announce the launch of the #MLS4theLou campaign to bring an expansion Major League Soccer franchise to St. Louis.

Oct. 8 (2022)
St. Louis City2 loses in the MLS NEXT Pro final to the Columbus Crew 2, 4-1.

Oct. 7 (1919)
Former St. Louisan Tom Cahill (pictured), the executive secretary and primary founder of the U.S. Football Association (today’s U.S. Soccer Federation), announces a European tour for a team of mostly St. Louis players in 1920. They will play 14 matches in Sweden from Aug. 1 through Sept. 15, 1920 and will be the first St. Louis team to travel internationally. They will win seven, tie five and lose two on the trip.

October 6th (1984)
Oct. 6, 1984: Two St. Louisans are in the starting lineup and a third starter with a St. Louis connection helps the United States beat Netherlands Antilles, 4-0, in a World Cup qualifier at Busch Stadium before 12,436 fans.

October 5th (2018)
Oct. 5, 2018: Rockhurst University coach and St. Louis native Tony Tocco records his 700th coaching victory as the Hawks defeat William Jewell, 3-1, at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Mo.

October 4th (1949)
Oct. 4, 1949: The four teams in the professional St. Louis Major Soccer League decide to return to the U.S Open Cup tournament after sitting out the 1948-49 season.

October 3rd (1976)
Oct. 3, 1976: Future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Al Trost puts in a hard-nosed performance as the United States and Mexico play to a scoreless draw in a World Cup qualifier

Oct. 2 (1976)
In a battle of undefeated teams marred by verbal and physical abuse, visiting and nationally third-ranked Clemson scores twice in the second overtime on goals by Charles Headlam and Rennie Phillips to defeat No. 7 SIU-Edwardsville, 4-2.

Oct. 1 (2016)
It’s a big day for goal-scorers from St. Louis playing in Europe. Vedad Ibisevic (left) scores both goals in Hertha Berlin’s 2-0 win over Hamburg in Germany’s first-division Bundesliga. Meanwhile, Tim Ream (right) scores his first goal in England in Fulham’s 2-1 loss to Queens Park Rangers in the second-division English Championship.

Sept. 30 (1933)
Audax of Chile comes to St. Louis expecting to continue its perfect record on its nine-game U.S. tour. Stix, Baer & Fuller, which had won the National Challenge Cup (today’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup) the previous April, defeats the Chileans, posting 6-4 and 3-2 victories.

Sept. 29 (1893)
The Sodality League, the forerunner of today’s St. Louis Catholic Youth Council, is organized following an informal series of baseball games the previous summer. Young men’s sodalities, or religious guilds, from six parishes and Christian Brothers College comprise the league’s soccer operations under the name of the Sodality Foot Ball League.

Sept. 28 (2019)
The University of California men defeat San Francisco, 2-0, for the Bears’ 200th victory under head coach and St. Louis native Kevin Grimes.

Sept. 27 (1981)
Jan Gettemeyer scores two goals and adds an assist as the University of Missouri-St. Louis blasts the University of Wisconsin, 6-1, in the championship game of the National Women’s College Budweiser Soccer Tournament at UMSL. The event runs from Sept. 25-27 and is the first national women’s college soccer tournament in St. Louis.

Sept. 26 (2016 and 2018)
Sept. 26 is a big day for goalkeepers from St Louis. Tomas Gomez (right) wins the United Soccer League’s Golden Glove Award in 2016. In 2018, Joe Willis (left) pitches a shutout as the Houston Dynamo downs the Philadelphia Union, 3-0, in the U.S. Open Cup final.

Sept. 25 (1981)
The University of Missouri-St. Louis is ranked No. 1 in the nation for the first time in the Rivermen’s history. Off to a 4-0 start, UMSL climbs to the top of the NCAA Division II rankings.

Sept. 24 (1905)
The first visit by an English team to St. Louis severely wounds local pride. For the second day in a row, the Pilgrims, a team of British amateurs, obliterate the St. Louis Association Football Players, 6-0. The Englishmen smashed the same St. Louis all-stars, 10-0, the day before.

Sept. 23 (1977)
A pair of Dons do in the No. 1-ranked University of San Francisco Dons to lead No. 2 St. Louis University to a 2-1 victory before 6,872 fans at Francis Field. Don Huber and Don Aubuchon score four minutes apart as the Bills snap a19-game unbeaten streak by the Dons, two-time defending NCAA champions.
