Oct. 11, 1958: Soccer kicks off in a modest way at St. Louis University as the Bills play their first match, a 1-1 tie with Wheaton College, at Hickey Field in St. Louis.

Joaquin Rivas scores the game’s only goal in the third minute of stoppage time to give St. Louis FC a victory over Hartford Athletic in the first round of the USL Championship playoffs in Hartford. The outcome marks the only playoff victory for St. Louis FC in its six-year history. The team will cease operations after the 2020 season.

Former St. Louisan Tom Cahill (pictured), the executive secretary and primary founder of the U.S. Football Association (today’s U.S. Soccer Federation), announces a European tour for a team of mostly St. Louis players in 1920. They will play 14 matches in Sweden from Aug. 1 through Sept. 15, 1920 and will be the first St. Louis team to travel internationally. They will win seven, tie five and lose two on the trip.

Oct. 6, 1984: Two St. Louisans are in the starting lineup and a third starter with a St. Louis connection helps the United States beat Netherlands Antilles, 4-0, in a World Cup qualifier at Busch Stadium before 12,436 fans.

Oct. 5, 2018: Rockhurst University coach and St. Louis native Tony Tocco records his 700th coaching victory as the Hawks defeat William Jewell, 3-1, at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Mo.

Oct. 4, 1949: The four teams in the professional St. Louis Major Soccer League decide to return to the U.S Open Cup tournament after sitting out the 1948-49 season.

Audax of Chile comes to St. Louis expecting to continue its perfect record on its nine-game U.S. tour. Stix, Baer & Fuller, which had won the National Challenge Cup (today’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup) the previous April, defeats the Chileans, posting 6-4 and 3-2 victories.

The Sodality League, the forerunner of today’s St. Louis Catholic Youth Council, is organized following an informal series of baseball games the previous summer. Young men’s sodalities, or religious guilds, from six parishes and Christian Brothers College comprise the league’s soccer operations under the name of the Sodality Foot Ball League.

The University of California men defeat San Francisco, 2-0, for the Bears’ 200th victory under head coach and St. Louis native Kevin Grimes.
