St. Louis University’s Vedad Ibisevic is named Conference USA freshman of the year.

Nov. 11 (1934)
Soccer games pitting teams from St. Ambrose on The Hill against Carlstrom from nearby Dogtown, known for being “boisterous,” sink to even greater depths. A Muny League match at Forest Park erupts into a riot 16 minutes into the second half when players fight and some of the 3,500 fans swarm on the field to engage in a free-for-all.

St. Louisan Maddie Pokorny scores her team’s only goal in HB Køge’s 5-1 loss to Arsenal in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

November 9 (1924)
Future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Joe Carenza Sr. is born. Carenza will prove to be a steady fullback for a number of St. Louis teams, but his biggest legacy will be the innovative programs he helps develop for junior and senior soccer in St. Louis.

November 8 (2018)
Becky Sauerbrunn plays the entire match as the U.S. Women’s National Team wins its 500th game in the program’s history by defeating Portugal, 1-0, in an international friendly in Lisbon.

November 7 (1966)
Future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Pat McBride is the first player signed by the new St. Louis Stars of the National Professional Soccer League.

November 6 (1992)
The St. Louis Ambush, the latest indoor soccer team in town, lose their first-ever game, 13-10, against the Dayton Dynamo in Dayton, Ohio.

Nov. 5 (1972)
In a game between eventual national champions that will go down in SIU-Edwardsville history as the “3-1 tie,” the Cougars and St. Louis U.’s Billikens battle to a 1-1 standoff before 14,459 fans at Busch Stadium. SIUE’s Chris Carenza has two goals nullified.

November 4 (2018)
With her team trailing, 4-1, with 8 minutes left and with only 10 players after Sarah Carroll’s second yellow card, St. Louisan Alyssa Mautz ignites a miracle. Her goal on a left-footed shot off an assist from Sam Kerr starts Perth Glory on an amazing comeback in an Australian W-League match with Canberra United.

Nov. 3 (1907)
The St. Louis Soccer Football League plays its first games, beginning a 31-year run of professional soccer in St. Louis. About 2,000 fans watch a doubleheader at Athletic Park. St. Teresa of St. Louis tops the Thistles, composed mostly of players from Benld, Ill,, 3-0, in the opening match. The other game ends in a 2-2 draw between Innisfails and St. Mathews, both of St. Louis.

Nov. 2 (1984)
The St. Louis Steamers open the season with that indoor soccer rarity, a shutout, in a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Sting before 13,115 fans at The Arena. Future Indoor Soccer Hall of Famer Slobo Ilijevski posts his fifth career shutout.

Nov. 1 (1896)
St. Teresa’s, the dominant soccer team in St. Louis for much of the 1890s, posts its second victory in as many games in defense of its St. Louis city championship by blasting the Cappells, 6-0.

October 31st (1909)
Oct. 31, 1909: The Pilgrims, an English team touring the United States to promote soccer, wrap up their final appearance in St. Louis with a second-half bag of tricks that treats a crowd of 8,000 at Sportsman’s Park. The Pilgrims score 10 goals in the second half to beat St. Leo’s of St. Louis, 12-1. Oct. 30 (1981)
Sixteenth-ranked St. Louis University nips ninth-ranked Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville 2-1 before 14, 772 fans in the two teams’ annual Bronze Boot Game at Busch Stadium.

Oct. 17 (1896)
Future U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame journalist Dent McSkimming is born. “The Senor,” as he will be called by his newspaper peers because of his fluency in Spanish, will become a legendary soccer journalist, primarily with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, covering the sport at all levels for more than 50 years.

October 16th (1982)
The third-ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis women hand No. 1-ranked and defending national champion North Carolina its first-ever loss, 2-1, in a tournament in Orlando, Fla.

Oct. 15 (2013)
Former St. Louisan Vedad Ibisevic sends the soccer fans of Bosnia and Herzegovina into ecstasy by scoring the only goal of the game against Lithuania in the 68th minute to qualify Bosnia and Herzegovina for its first trip to the World Cup.

October 14th (1894)
A sports roundup in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that Christian Brothers College will host the St. Patrick’s Young Men’s Sodality “under association rules.”

October 13th (2007)
It’s a day of firsts for soccer in St. Louis. In the first-ever soccer match at the Edward Jones Dome, Lori Chalupny comes home for the first time as a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team and plays the opening 84 minutes of a 5-1 victory over Mexico.
